BEREAVEMENT - LOSS & GRIEF

Death, separation or saying goodbye can come with an overwhelming sense of loss.

Hardly anyone is prepared for the shock and emotional aftermath following the death of a person, a beloved pet or something significant. Grief, anger, depression, confusion, utter helplessness - there are so many possible reactions that it can feel like a rollercoaster of emotions. Counselling can help you through this difficult time of grief and loss by helping you to cope with all these feelings.

All thoughts and feelings are welcome in counselling

Even though no one can know what you are going through, as a counsellor I can help you deal with the many feelings, e.g.

  • Shock, emptiness and disbelief

  • Denial and numbness

  • Anger and rage

  • Overwhelming sadness and hopelessness

  • Regret, guilt

  • Depression

  • Physical pain

During the grieving process you may experience any of these symptoms and many others, which may come in 'waves'. There may be good days when you feel you can carry on almost as you did before the loss, and bad days when everything seems impossible or a great effort.

What is grief, is it normal to feel this way?

It is normal to feel a range of emotions, whether sadness, anger, numbness or denial. You may have moments when you cry uncontrollably or feel extremely exhausted, or you may wonder why you are not suffering and feel no emotion at all.

Grief is not only about death. Although we associate grief with the death of a person, it can also occur after other forms of 'loss', such as the end of a relationship or when a child leaves home.

How does grief counselling work?

There is no 'one size fits all' solution for coping with grief, there is no 'time frame' for the duration of your grief. However, processing your feelings can help you "come to terms" with all that has happened and all that has changed for you.

Many people imagine that they will go through different stages of grief in an orderly process. But grief does not work that way. There are no stages of grief. In counselling, you explore what is going on inside you, with the aim of finding acceptance and a way forward after the loss.

How long does the counselling take?

The simple answer is: "It takes as long as it takes". Some people take longer to grieve, while others process the changes more quickly - try not to feel like you have to go at a certain pace.

Take the first step

Through video chat I offer you a digital space where you can just be. Nothing is required of you, no demands are made. You can use the time to talk about whatever is on your mind, whether it has to do with your loss or something else entirely.

Grief often brings other feelings and concerns to the surface, such as questions about the meaning of life, self-confidence, physical intimacy or your own mortality. My counselling offers you a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space that is just for you.

«Death ends a life, not a relationship. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on - in the hearts of all those you touched and nurtured while you were here.» - Morrie Schwartz
